Graduate Research Assistant

Aug 2020 - Dec 2020

Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR)

  • Stochastic Toolpath Milling Process - Design and Development for Automotive Applications

    • Evaluated Stochastic Milling processes for contouring of complex shapes by designing and conducting research activities; applying knowledge of machining, product design, fabrication, materials, tools, and software to improve manufacturability.

    • Prepared DoE and Hypothesis testing for evaluating the performance of Stochastic Milling Process on CNC milling machine.

    • Performed statistical analysis of the test data recognizing trends, patterns, and information in data and used it to draw logical conclusions; utilized this information to optimize the machining parameters and improve toolpath generation algorithm, which reduced the machining time by 60%, reduced the toolpath length by 45%, and reduced the average forces by 22%.

  • Other Responsibilities

    • Use 3D CAD applications to design custom fixtures, tooling, and lab equipment considering design constraints for in-house manufacturability (design for manufacture (DFM) /design for assembly (DFA)); interpret and review all design drawings (with GD&T) and changes, operation sheets, process procedures and generate Bills of Material (BOMs).

    • Build fixtures and lab equipment by CNC machining; determine the sequence of operations and select cutting tools needed.

    • Lead the team for project planning, project management, decision-making, and problem-solving activities for timely and effective execution of assigned development projects.

    • Develop manufacturing equipment pursing proposal by studying the research plans and commitments; identify vendors, evaluate equipment specifications and capabilities; planning, managing, and buying of equipment and tooling.

    • Carry out regular preventative maintenance of machinery; standardize maintenance instructions and procedures.

    • Troubleshoot equipment and CNC machines breakdowns; perform Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) for a quick start over.

    • Report presentations and summarize technical findings in team meetings and work with cross-functional teams.
